How To Stop An Active Roof Leak During a Winter Storm

Winter storms can bring heavy rain, strong winds, and freezing temperatures, putting roofs under immense pressure. Even a minor weakness can quickly turn into a serious leak, threatening your property and belongings. Knowing how to respond immediately can prevent extensive damage and give you time until professional help arrives.

Prioritise Safety First

Safety should always come first. If water is leaking near electrical outlets, turn off the electricity in that area or the main power supply. Keep everyone, including pets, away from the affected area. Place buckets or containers under drips and use towels to absorb water and protect flooring and furniture.

If the ceiling begins to bulge under the weight of water, you can carefully puncture the lowest point with a screwdriver to release water into a bucket. This reduces the risk of the ceiling collapsing suddenly.

Contain the Leak and Minimise Damage

Once safety is ensured, focus on reducing immediate damage. Direct water into containers and replace towels or sheets regularly if water flow is heavy. For leaks along walls or ceilings, plastic sheeting can help channel water away from furniture and flooring.

Ventilate the area gently to prevent condensation, particularly in lofts or attic spaces. Keeping the space warm while allowing airflow helps minimise long-term moisture damage.

Temporary Repairs — Only When Safe

Walking on a wet roof during a storm is extremely dangerous, but temporary fixes can help reduce water ingress if done safely. Heavy-duty tarps are the most effective option: cover the leak, extend the tarp beyond the affected area, and secure the edges. Avoid nailing directly into tiles or roof materials as this could worsen the situation.

For small gaps or displaced tiles, roofing tape or temporary sealants can help divert water away until professional roofers arrive. If leaks are near vents, chimneys, or skylights, consider using a sheet or plastic barrier to guide water safely off the roof.

Remember, these are temporary measures only and are not substitutes for professional roof repairs.

Inspect After the Storm

Once the storm has passed and it’s safe to access the area, carefully inspect both the interior and exterior of your roof. In lofts, check for wet rafters, damaged insulation, or damp patches. On the roof itself, look for broken tiles, damaged flashing, or gaps around chimneys and vents.

Document all damage with photos or videos. This record is useful for insurance purposes and provides roofers with clear information to plan permanent repairs.

Contact professional roofers as soon as possible to carry out lasting roof repairs. Flat roofs may require specialised materials and repair methods, so make sure your repair team has experience with them.

Dry and Restore

After repairs, allow the structure to dry completely. Ensure lofts and ceilings are ventilated to prevent mould growth or rot. If necessary, use dehumidifiers to remove lingering moisture from timber or insulation. Prompt attention prevents further damage and keeps your home safe.

Prevent Future Leaks

A storm leak is a warning to review roof maintenance. Regular inspections can identify vulnerable tiles, loose flashing, or blocked gutters before they lead to leaks. For flat roofs, check that drainage systems are clear and that no water is pooling. Addressing small issues early can save significant costs and headaches.

Consider upgrading areas prone to leaks, such as old flashing, worn membranes, or seals around skylights and vents. Maintaining a small emergency kit with tarpaulins, roofing tape, buckets, and tools ensures you are ready if another leak occurs.

Why Professional Roofers Matter

Temporary fixes are only a short-term solution. Professional roofers have the knowledge, experience, and equipment to provide lasting roof repairs safely. Attempting major repairs yourself can be risky, particularly during storms, and may worsen the problem.

Experienced roofers can assess damage, repair complex roofing structures, and ensure that both pitched and flat roofs remain watertight. Regular maintenance from professionals also reduces the likelihood of leaks during future storms.

Taking immediate, careful action during a leak and following up with professional roof repairs ensures your home stays safe and dry throughout the winter season.
